Betreff: dringende Bitte zum Schutz der Orcas und Delfine im geschlossenen Marineland Antibes

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

sehr geehrter Herr Präsident Macron,

mit großer Sorge wende ich mich im Namen zahlreicher Tierschützer – darunter »Sea Shepherd France«, »One Voice«, die Privatinitiative »Save the Ocean« sowie vieler engagierte Bürger – an Sie.

Es geht um das #Schicksal der beiden #Orcas Wikie (23 Jahre) und ihres Sohnes Keijo sowie der 12 Großen #Tümmler im stillgelegten Meerespark #Marineland #Antibes.

Wie Ihnen bekannt sein dürfte, wurde der Park am 5. Januar 2024 geschlossen – als Reaktion auf das französische Gesetz Nummer 2021 1539 vom 30. November 2021, das die #Haltung und öffentliche Zurschaustellung von #Walen und #Delfinen verbietet. Seither leben die #Tiere unter äußerst prekären Bedingungen: Die Wasserqualität in den Becken ist miserabel, die Futterversorgung erfolgt nur noch auf Mindestmaß, und eine mentale Stimulation – für hochintelligente und soziale Tiere wie Orcas überlebenswichtig – findet kaum noch statt.

Gleichzeitig scheint sich niemand mehr verantwortlich zu fühlen. Ein undurchsichtiger Zuständigkeitskonflikt zwischen Behörden und Umweltministerium hat zu einem lähmenden Stillstand geführt. Das Leben dieser #Tiere droht durch bürokratische Untätigkeit endgültig gefährdet zu werden.

Dabei gibt es Hoffnung: Das geplante »#Sanctuary Projekt« im italienischen #Taranto zeigt konkrete Fortschritte und könnte – laut italienischen Behörden – innerhalb eines Jahres bezugsbereit sein. Auch mit Griechenland finden bereits Gespräche statt.

Was fehlt, ist ein klares politisches Signal aus Frankreich, das eine tragfähige Lösung ermöglicht.

Wir fordern daher mit Nachdruck:

• Sofortige Verbesserung der Haltungsbedingungen vor Ort – insbesondere in Bezug auf Wasserqualität, Futterversorgung und mentale Stimulation

• Aktive Zusammenarbeit mit internationalen Partnern zur schnellstmöglichen Umsiedlung in ein geeignetes Meeresrefugium

• Konsequente Umsetzung des Gesetzes Nummer 2021 1539 ohne weitere Verzögerungen

Die Privatinitiative »Save the Ocean« ist davon überzeugt, dass der #Tod dieser Tiere bewusst in Kauf genommen wird – sei es aus wirtschaftlicher Gleichgültigkeit oder mit Blick auf mögliche Versicherungszahlungen. Ein erschütterndes Beispiel hierfür ist der Fall der Orca-Dame Tokitae (Lolita) im #Miami #Seaquarium. Auch sie sollte in eine Meeresbucht überführt werden – doch sie starb, bevor dies möglich wurde. #Orca Lolita wurde 53 Jahre lang im Miami Seaquarium in Gefangenschaft gehalten. Sie wurde 1970 aus Penn Cove gefangen und starb im August 2023.

Die Macht des Geldes darf nicht über das Leben fühlender Lebewesen triumphieren.

Gemeinsam mit »#Sea #Shepherd France«, »One Voice« und zahlreichen weiteren Tierschutzorganisationen fordern wir Sie dringend auf:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Dear President Macron,

With great concern, I am writing to you on behalf of numerous animal rights activists—including “Sea Shepherd France”, “One Voice”, the private initiative “Save the Ocean” and many committed citizens.

This letter concerns the fate of the two orcas Wikie (23 years old) and her son Keijo, as well as the twelve bottlenose dolphins held in the closed Marineland Antibes marine park.

As you are likely aware, the park was closed on January 5, 2024, following the French law No. 2021-1539 of November 30, 2021, which prohibits the keeping and public display of whales and dolphins. Since then, the animals have been living under extremely precarious conditions: The water quality in the pools is poor, food supply has been reduced to a minimum, and mental stimulation—vital for highly intelligent and social animals such as orcas—is barely provided.

At the same time, it seems that no one feels responsible anymore. An opaque conflict over jurisdiction between authorities and the Ministry of Environment has led to a paralyzing standstill. The lives of these animals are at risk due to bureaucratic inactivity.

There is hope: The planned sanctuary project in Taranto, Italy, is making concrete progress and, according to Italian authorities, could be ready for occupancy within a year. Talks are also ongoing with Greece.

What is missing is a clear political signal from France that would enable a viable solution.

Therefore, we urgently demand:

• Immediate improvement of the animals’ living conditions on site – especially regarding water quality, food supply, and mental stimulation

• Active cooperation with international partners for the swift relocation to a suitable marine sanctuary

• Consistent enforcement of law number 2021 1539 without further delays

The private initiative Save the Ocean is convinced that the death of these animals is being knowingly accepted – either out of economic indifference or with regard to potential insurance payments. A heartbreaking example is the case of the orca Tokitae (Lolita) at the Miami Seaquarium. She too was supposed to be transferred to a sea sanctuary – but died before this could happen. Orca Lolita was held in captivity at the Miami Seaquarium for 53 years. She was captured in 1970 in Penn Cove and died in August 2023.

The power of money must not triumph over the lives of sentient beings.

Together with “Sea Shepherd France”, “One Voice” and many other animal protection organizations, we urgently ask you: Please take responsibility. Act now. Help save the lives of these marine mammals before it is too late.
